About Jack Kotz

Welcome to my site, and thanks for your interest. My work is largely about Place. To convey sense of place and to describe what it feels like to be in a particular place are my goals. I am particularly interested in the various relationships between people and places.

I have been involved in photography on a professional level since 1983. I started out in the Washington D.C. area, and subsequently moved to Santa Fe, NM in 1991. Much of my commercial photography has been architectural work, but I also have a considerable amount of experience with editorial portraits and photographing people for advertising. Examples of this work can be found in the Clients and Books sections of this site.

The other sections of the site represent ongoing personal projects that I have worked on over the years.

Ms. Booth's Garden is the title of my latest book, a project that spans twenty years of work in a small community in Mississippi. This book was published by the Mississippi Museum of Art in the Spring of 2002 in conjunction with an exhibition of the photographs. This exhibition is continuing to travel nationally. Images from the book are in the collection of the National Museum of American Art, The Mississippi Museum of Art, The Mississippi State Historical Museum, and numerous private collections.

Dust Crackers is a series of images depicting a young child's discovery of the world. I kept hearing Nathan talk about making dust crackers, and one day I asked him what it meant. "You know daddy," he replied, "like fire crackers but with dust."

Blind Pass is a place where a bridge connects Sanibel and Captiva islands on the west coast of Florida. I have visited periodically over the last decade or so with my panoramic camera to witness the scene there.

What's New is just that. A place to post new work and images that need looking at.

My interests are to continue working as a commercial photographer, and to continue working on the other projects that are here. My goal is to do projects for editorial advertising purposes in the style I am known for in my personal projects. I work very well with people and production teams, as I know intimately the importance and joy of the collaborative process.

Thanks again for looking.
